Rep. Luis Gutierrez says he was placed in handcuffs Monday after refusing orders to leave a staged sit-in at the Chicago headquarters for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Illinois Democrat met with ICE’s acting regional director Monday morning to discuss the agency’s enforcement policy under the Trump administration on illegal immigrants living in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported.
“The congressman decided he did not get the answers he was looking for from the regional director, and he’s going to be staying inside until he gets answers, even if that means risking arrest,” said Doug Rivlin, Mr. Gutierrez’s spokesman.
Mr. Gutierrez tweeted Monday afternoon that he had been briefly placed in handcuffs and was waiting to hear whether he would be arrested.
“Federal police giving us our first warning that we risk arrest if we stay at Chicago ICE HQ. #chiresist #twill,” the congressman tweeted Monday afternoon. “I was arrested, cuffed then cuffs were cut off. Waiting for further word on if/when we will be arrested. #chiresist”
His spokesman said that if Ms. Gutierrez is arrested, the U.S. Marshals Service would take him to the Dirksen Federal Building, the Tribune reported.
Mr. Gutierrez and other Hispanic members of Congress sent a letter to ICE last week expressing outrage at a series of tweets issued by the agency regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for DREAMers.
“President Trump and his people should keep their hands off of the DREAMers, period,” Mr. Gutierrez said in a statement Friday. “Tweeting out that every DACA recipient is vulnerable to deportation is just another way this President is trying to create fear in immigrant communities, to make families and children think that their government could come after them at any time. It is disgusting behavior on the part of the Department of Homeland Security and the White House and it needs to stop.”
