According to the State Department only 1,242 refugees were admitted into the U.S. in October 2017 compared to the 9,945 admitted in Oct. 2016 under the Obama administration. This 87% decline can be contributed to Pres. Trump’s executive order for tougher vetting procedures for refugees and capping the number of refugees to 45,000 for the fiscal year.

Under the Refugee Act of 1980 the president sets the yearly cap for refugees and Pres. Trump dropped the cap from the 85,000 set by the Obama administration last year.

If refugee admissions continue at the same pace for the next 11 months then only 15,000 refugees will be allowed into the U.S. for this fiscal year.

Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue’s (R-Ga.) RAISE Act would set the annual refugee cap to 50,000 a year, unless there was a humanitarian need to raise it. Pres. Trump has endorsed this bill that will also end chain migration and the visa lottery.
